Check the Lite with a Helper
I like to do this test when I check a vehicle. I stand behind the vehicle. Ask a friend to press the brake pedal. I look at the left brake light, the brake light and the high center brake light. I have found that the enhanced OBD-II scan tool, for the model years 2025–2026 can pull the body control module codes. The body control module codes point directly to the circuit or light that has failed. The body control module codes remove a lot of guesswork when I try to diagnose an LED problem.

Perform inspections: I have someone press the brake pedal each month while I walk around the car during a tire pressure or fluid check. I make sure the lights are working. I also make sure the brake pedal moves properly each month.
Check Housing Seals:
I check the rubber seals and the gaskets around the tail light housings regularly. If the rubber seals or the gaskets are loose or cracked moisture can seep in. I re‑seal the housing seals when necessary or replace the housing seals.
Use Quality Parts:
I always use OEM or high quality brand parts when I replace bulbs. Use Quality Parts because low cost bulbs have a life and cause problems.
Avoiding water accumulation:
Water can collect inside the tail lights. If you notice condensation, inside the tail lights dry the tail lights. Repair the seal immediately. In my experience doing this prevents damage to the LED circuitry, in today’s cars.
Include Electrical Inspection in Maintenance:
As part of a multi-point inspection, ask your technician to perform a brief inspection of the brake light operation and associated fuses during regular maintenance.
